In 2002, an accident left Kanye West with a broken jaw. Two weeks later, he recorded his debut single as an artist with his jaw wired shut. Being nearly unable to use his voice reinforced Kanye's view of the human voice as the most versatile instrument, something that became the bedrock of his approach to music.
